Allwin ; Bertil Guve ; Kristina Adolphson ; Borje Ahlstedt ; Kristian A
'Fanny and Alexander' is the story of two children belonging
to a wealthy, extensive theatrical family in provincial Sweden in the early
years of the 20th century, 10-year-old Alexander (Bertil Guve) and his
younger sister, Fanny (Pernilla Alwin). When their father dies unexpectedly
during a performance and their mother decides to remarry, the children are
forced to relocate to the austere (and possibly haunted) home of their stern
and rather coldhearted stepfather, Bishop Vergerus (Jan Malmsjo). A means of
escape is eventually provided by Isak Jacobi (Erland Josephson), a longtime
friend of the Ekdahl family's who seems to possess magical powers. In this
somewhat autobiographical movie, which was filmed in the director’s
hometown of Uppsala, the gifted, precocious Alexander is a stand-in for
Bergman himself, who had a problematic relationship with his own father, a
strict clergyman.

Love (3 Silent Films By Yevgeni Bauer) (BFI)
-By:Yevgeni Bauer
Three silent films from
the pioneering Russian film-maker Yevgeni Bauer. Includes newly composed
music and video essay on Bauer.Twilight of a Woman's Soul (1913), his first
surviving film, already shows his masterful use of deep-focus photography.
After Death (1915) is adapted from a story by Turgenev and is imbued with
one of Bauer's favourite themes: the psychological hold of the dead over the
living. The Dying Swan (1916) takes a sardonic view of the popular obsession
with morbidity and includes a chilling dream sequence. His sense of
cinematic space, his insight into the creative use of light and an audacity
in the handling of the camera, set him far ahead of his contemporaries,
influencing Eisenstein and Kuleshov amongst others.

off with its precious cargo, leaving the young man on the island. The
seafarers are shipwrecked, and Gerard, still poor, consoles himself with
Manina's pure love. More than the story of young love, 'Manina - The
Lighthouse Keepers Daughter' is particularly noteworthy for the contribution
of Brigitte Bardot, just eighteen years old. The actress already lights up
the screen, before her appearance in 'And God Created Woman'.

Nominated for nine
Academy Awards including Best Picture, The Defiant Ones broke new ground by
delivering its message of racial tolerance through a fast-moving blend of
action and suspense. It remains "a raw, powerful film that is as
exciting as it is moving, real and literate" (Variety).Joker Jackson
(Tony Curtis) and Noah Cullen (Sidney Poitier) are two convicts on the run.
Escaping from a Southern work gang, the two men are bound together by an
unbreakable iron chain and separated by an unbridled hatred towards each
other. Relentlessly pursued by a posse and bloodhounds, they put aside their
differences to survive. But when a lonely woman (Cara Williams) breaks their
chain and deliberately sends Cullen to certain death, Jackson must decide
what's more important: saving Cullen… or saving himself.
